How to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview Blunders
How to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview BlundersHow to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview BlundersMistakes are a part of life, so dont beat yourself up if you happen to make one during a job einstellungsgesprch. Instead, quickly turn your energy toward rectifying the situation youll show the prospective employer that youre a competent problem-solver who knows how to make the best out of a bad situation.Heres a look at three common job interview blunders and how to bounce back from them1. Youre going to be late. You forgot to set your alarm clock or underestimated how long it would take to drive to the interview site, and now theres no way youll make it in at the scheduled time. Do you still have a shot at the job?Yes. While such a scenario doesnt get the relationship off on the best note, call to apologize and give the interviewer a heads-up. Youll show respect for the persons time and demonstrate that you own up to mistakes. Ask if it is still okay to come in today or if you might have a second chance on another day. And then get there2. Nerves are getting the better of you.Youre having trouble focusing or the answers coming out of your mouth arent the ones you practiced, and now youre worried that the interviewer has a bad impression (which makes your palms sweat even more). How can you right the ship?Take a few breaths to center yourself and shake off the interview jitters, rather than worry about what youve already said or done. Time still exists for you to shine. And if you find yourself rambling- a common occurrence when nervous- heed this advice from Michelle Petrazzuolo, senior HR professional at Petrazzuolo HR. Take a pause. Its perfectly okay to stop and say, Let me think for a moment I want to give you a thoughtful answer to this. That gives you a couple of beats to collect yourself and try again.3. Youre underprepared.A series of disruptions kept you from completing much research on the company. Or you left your list of questions on the di ning room table. How can you still come off as a competent, interested candidate?Valerie Streif, senior advisor for Mentat, says its crucial to still try to make the interview an exchange rather than an interrogation. Ask general questions like Whats your favorite part about working for this company? or What do the next five years of growth goals look like for the company? as a way to save yourself and gather more information about the role. And then follow up with an exceptional thank-you note, even if you dont feel the interview went very well. Thoughtfully elaborate on an issue discussed or present a possible solution to a departmental problem- whatever you can todemonstrate your concern for this company and your desire for this job.Know someone looking for a job? Sales Manager Finds a Job Close to Home
Sales Manager Finds a Job Close to Home Sales Manager Finds a Job Close to Home Donald Wroble wasnât ready to uproot his family from Atlanta. So he turned to Ladders to find his third job through the site.Donald Wroble has had a lot of practice selling himself the past several years. Thatâs why, when the SalesLadder member started looking for a new job in January, he was ready to attack the job search with confidence.âI would say, as a professional marketer, the best thing you can do for yourself is to stay on top of what is happening in your field, and find out what unique skills you can market,â he said. âThat way, youâre ready when you have to find a new job.âIn 2005, Wroble had left his position as a sales manager for BASF, a global chemical company, when the company went through a number of restructurings. In the next four years, he worked for two other companies that also went through reorganizations, each time finding another position through Ladders.By January 2008, he had landed at GE Energy, in a marketing role, working to get the company into the chemical industry. In January 2009, GE Energy was changing gears. The company asked him to relocate to Houston. It was not an ideal time for him to move his family, so it was time once again to use Ladders.âThere was no way I was going to relocate my family,â he said. âI had one kid in high school and another in middle school, and houses were not selling. I wanted to stay in Atlanta. So I started looking for another job.âAn interim stay in HoustonStill, he continued working for his employer, living in Houston while his family stayed in Atlanta. He devoted his off-hours to looking for a job. âIt was a good four-month search,â he said. âI did the normal networking that everyone recommends, but in a down market, that wasnât as fruitful as it might have been.âAnd, while he wanted to stay in Atlanta, there were a few other cities he considered, including Louisville, Ky., and Chicago. âI didnât want to limit my opportunities,â he said. âBut I knew my ki ds didnât want to move. So we picked just a few cities where we wouldnât mind being.âOne of the features Wroble said he likes best about Ladders is the fact that he can search keywords specific to the type of job he is looking for and the geographical area he would like to be in, and that Ladders will send him alerts when those jobs appear. In his case, director jobs in sales in Atlanta. âItâs a great matching service,â he said. The fact that he was working full time while conducting his search made it all much easier for him. âThe best thing is I could be traveling anywhere in the world but could still check on my job hunt,â he said. âIt was key for me to be able to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour every day on it. Youâve got to stay focused on your search.âWroble said he sent hundreds of resumes during his six-month search before he found his perfect job.âI saw a job listed on Ladders that I knew was the perfect job. I knew the company, it was well respe cted in the chemical industry, and they were looking for a global sales director, something I had learned in previous jobs. It involved customer service and tech service. And, thereâs room to grow.âAnd, best of all, it was based in Atlanta.Wroble sent his resume, and the company, PolyOne, the worldâs largest compounder and distributor of plastics, responded immediately. After a phone conversation with the hiring manager, they set up an in-person meeting for the following week, when he would be home visiting his family. Even though he got off the airplane with a case of laryngitis from allergies, he was able to make enough of an impression on the folks at PolyOne that a few weeks later his eventual boss flew to Houston to meet with him. One more meeting in Atlanta with more PolyOne executives, and he was offered the job.He started in mid-July as the global director of sales, in the specialty-ink division. Why you should watch the job market while youâre employedWroble said he believes that being in the job market so much over the past several years may have been stressful, but it was also good preparation for this position. âI was at BASF for 20 years, and I had a good job, so I never looked outside to see what was happening in the marketplace. I didnât know my value in the market. But once things changed there, and I had to go outside, I learned a lot from researching other companies, interviewing and working other places. And I was able to better assess my value; Iâve been able to almost double my salary since working at BASF.âWroble suggested that people, whether they feel the need to change jobs or not, should go out into the market every year or so, just to see what is available. âThat way you can stay in practice, so when you do need a job, youâve got the skills down.âAs for himself, Wroble said heâs had enough practice for a while. âThere is a lot of great opportunity with this job, and I am hoping to stay put for a while,â he said. âThe thought that we might have to move put a lot of stress on our family. Iâd certainly like to stick around and let the kids finish school here.â

Why we procrastinate (and how to stop)
Why we procrastinate (and how to stop) Why we procrastinate (and how to stop) When youâre looking down the barrel of a school midterm report or a major work project, finding inspiration should be easy. Youâre on deadline, after all! But the urge to procrastinate strikes us all, and often at the worst times.Procrastination takes many forms, and leans on avoidant traits that end up harming us in the long run.. Here are the main reasons we procrastinate - and how to stop.1. The pursuit of perfectionA project left undone still has potential for perfection. An unwritten report has no typos. An uncoded program, no bugs. In a perfectionist mindset, when you do work, you risk screwing something up. And thatâs a scary thought to some. By procrastinating, we hold ourselves to an impossible standard - and as a result, never achieve anything noteworthy.Science backs this theory up: A study from York University indicated that students who scored highly in measures of perfectionism also had strong tendencies to procrastinate. But how do you squash your perfecti onist tendencies and get back to the grind? A therapist can help you work through the root causes of your perfectionism, like anxiety. Also, there are some exercises you can do yourself, like changing how you consider âsuccessâ and being kinder to yourself.Once you learn to face the possibility of failure, starting projects becomes much simpler.2. Low energy levelsSometimes we procrastinate because we canât do anything else: The thought of opening our laptop, sitting down at our desk, and writing 10 pages (10 pages!?) seems impossible. There can be a number of causes for low energy.First, do a healthy-habits check. Are you eating junk food? Drinking too much? Sleeping less than eight hours a day? Not exercising? Any one of these problems could be your procrastination culprit. But if youâre generally doing right by your body, itâs time to call in a pro.A doctor can check your blood: you may have anemia, a hypoactive thyroid, or low B-12. They can also go over your medi cal history for any other diagnoses that may lead to low energy.Depression can also cause low energy. A therapist can help make that assessment and get you the help you need.3. Inability to focusYou want to work on your paper. You really do. But every time you open your computer, you find yourself browsing to Facebook or Reddit - and suddenly eight hours of mindless âsugar-filledâ entertainment have passed, and youâve written maybe ten words.Improving your focus isnât impossible. A number of techniques help you hone in on the task at hand, like brief meditation beforehand, unplugging from technology, or listening to calming background music. But if mindfulness isnât helping, consider checking in with your therapist. You might have ADHD.While procrastination isnât a direct symptom of ADHD, research has shown that there are correlations between procrastinators and other symptoms. A mental health professional can determine if you have related behaviors that indicate an ADHD diagnosis - and are causing your procrastination, too.4. Believing a better you will do it laterâFuture youâ will totally get this done. Future you will have endless opportunities to succeed. For instance, itâs supposed to rain on Saturday, so hiking wonât tempt you. And by the weekend, youâll know for sure if you got the promotion you were angling for, so youâll be in a much better mood. But we canât hoist our problems onto our future selves. If weâre waiting for the perfect time and the ideal circumstances, we may not get anything done. Maybe the sun shines on Saturday - and maybe you get passed over for the job. Future you could be just as gloomy and sad as you are today, so why not just get started? If the project looks too momentous for current you, break it into smaller pieces. Work for just ten minutes and then âtreat yo selfâ with something small. Repeat this process enough times and the project will be done - before future you has a chance to muck it up.5. The task is vague or uncertainSometimes, we avoid doing a project because we donât know what the project really entails. Perhaps the instructions are vague, or the scope is enormous - leaving you flailing about. To sort out the task and fix this pesky problem, get out your pen and paper (or whatever brainstorming tool works best for you). Write down everything that needs to get done, starting with the tiniest aspects. For a long research paper, âgo to the libraryâ or âdo a Google searchâ are acceptable step ones.Find an easy, manageable first task and go from there. Once youâve completed that to-do, go back to your list. Have any new must-dos come up? Add them. Go down the list step by step until youâve got the whole thing done. And if the procrastination monster rises again, feel free to go scorched-earth and repeat this process entirely. Getting lost in the woods of our to-do list is also an easy invitation for procrastination.Seek Help if Procrast ination is Affecting YouProcrastination is a frustrating desire. Of course we want to get the project done - itâs hanging over our head like Damoclesâ sword. But sometimes we just canât do it. Identifying the root cause of your hesitation is the key to get must-do work done.A therapist or counselor can teach you methods to help work past whatever is holding you back from completing important tasks or projects. They also provide a safe level of accountability that can be followed up on weekly. Consider this type of help if procrastination is affecting your performance or happiness in critical areas like work or relationships. This article was originally published on Talkspace.com.

7 Cool Hockey Jobs On (and Off) the Ice
7 Cool Hockey Jobs On (and Off) the Ice 7 Cool Hockey Jobs On (and Off) the Ice Interesting Jobs: The Coolest Hockey Gigs on (and Off) the Ice If you love hockey, then these jobs are a real power play. When you were growing up, you practiced your drop pass and slap shot as you dreamed of playing center for your favorite National Hockey League (NHL) team. You'd imagine that you're on the ice for game seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs scoring the winning goal just before the horn. And then, somewhere along the line, reality kicked in. Maybe you blew out your knee or, more realistically, you just realized you didn't have the skills to be an NHL player. That's okay. The vast majority of us don't. That doesn't mean you can't be a part of your favorite hockey team. You can use the skills that you've developed since hanging up your skates to get a cool job somewhere else in the organization. Here are seven of the coolest hockey jobs off (and on) the ice with your favorite NHL team. 1. Equipment Manager. A hockey team's equipment manager is a Jack-of-all-trades and a go-to problem solver for the team. Duties can vary from handling laundry and arranging the team's uniforms to be ready for games to sharpening skates, ordering supplies and drying gloves and pads in between periods during games. If there is a piece of equipment or uniform that the players or coaches use during games or practice, the equipment manager needs to know all about it. Is there another brand or style available? Does the player want it kept clean or are they superstitious about rubbing off the good luck? It's all part of aday in the life of an NHL equipment manager. The good news is that equipment managers are not the forgotten and unappreciated members of the team that you might think. They are there for anything the players need before, during, and after games, and players generally love them for it. Qualifications for these careers: Attention to detail, multi-tasking, and patience. Lots of patience. 2. Video Producer/Editor. Think of all the times you've been to a game and that giant scoreboard lights up and plays an awesome intro for the team. Or it may have a tribute video to honor a retiring player or coach. The video board helps to engage the crowd and make the game-time experience more exciting. That means somebody has to make and edit all of those clips. The video producer/editor is in charge of finding footage to use, adding graphics that make the video more interesting, and then adding in the right music to bring it all together. Then, once it's all put together it needs to run smoothly and at the right times during the game. It definitely takes a lot of skill to do it right, but how much fun would it be to see a crowd of 20,000 rabid hockey fans cheering and rocking the arena to a video that you've put together? Qualifications: Knowledge of video editing software, graphic design, video shoot coordination and script writing. Working knowledge of what will work a hockey crowd into a frenzy is a plus. 3. Youth Hockey and Fan Development Coordinator. Remember how much you loved playing in hockey leagues as a kid? TheNHL loves that, too. Getting kids into hockey while they're young is the best way for them to develop tomorrow's NHL All-Stars as well as the next generation of hockey fans. A Youth Hockey and Fan Development Coordinator is the person who essentially serves as the liaison between and NHL team and those kids. This person helps to create, supply and operate youth hockey leagues. They'll also find ways to create a strong link between those young hockey fans and they're NHL employer. Youth classes, special game day events and contests are all a part of the job. If you truly love the sport, this hockey job helps you spread that love and nurture it in the next generation. How cool is that? Qualifications: Entertainment marketing, coaching or education background, event planning and passion for all thing hockey. 4. Operations Manager. Think about everything that goes on during an NHL hockey game from a fan's perspective. You have the music, the food, the drinks, ushers who guide you to your seat, security teams, and (yikes!) those bathrooms! That's where the operations manager comes in. For each part of the hockey experience that you get to enjoy as a fan, there is someone else responsible for making that happen. Someone is choosing and playing that pump-you-up music. Teams of people are working to cook and sell that food and those drinks. And, yes, someone is trying to keep those bathrooms supplied and as clean as possible for you. Think of the operations manager as a sort of building supervisor. This person makes sure the arena is ready for game time by organizing the crews to set up the rink. They make sure the parking lots are cleared of snow and debris. They manage the staff that is hired for game day operations is ready to provide a top-notch experience. Qualifications: Team management, attention to detail, problem solving, excellent communication skills and healthy blood pressure. 5. Massage Therapist. Professional athletes put their bodies through a tremendous amount of stress. To keep their muscles pliable and ready for action, most NHL players require regular deep-tissue massage sessions. That means NHL teams hire massage therapists to be on hand during workouts, off days, and even during games to help knock the kinks and cramps out of those valuable muscles. NHL massage therapists even travel with the teams. They need to know each player's trouble spots and help them speed their recovery between games with the right kind of massage. Sound too good to be true? It's not, but since there are only 30 teams, that means there are only 30 of these positions out there. It's a good gig if you can land it. Qualifications: Massage therapy license, ability to travel, knowledge of sports injuries/medicine, and very, very strong hands. 6. In-Game Social Media Coordinator. Are you the type of person who loves to watch your favorite show or sporting event and then Tweet about it or post on other social media channels to try to engage your friends? If so, you may have a career as an In-Game Social Media Coordinator in the NHL.Social media is playing a bigger and bigger role in sports these days. IGSMC's do just what you think. They watch the game and try to find fun and clever ways to post to social media and engage with the team's fan base. This can include paying attention to great plays, creating spur-of-the-moment GIF's or short videos, or even answering questions from fans. Sound fun? Qualifications for these careers: Solid understanding of hockey and NHL rules, social media savant, photo/video editing skills, ability to self-edit before posting something on social media. 7. Zamboni Driver. Of course this list of cool hockey jobs wouldn't be complete without this job, right? Technically, the machine is called an ice resurfacing machine. Zamboni is a brand name named afterFrank J. Zamboni, who invented the machine.. It's kind of like not all copiers are Xerox's or hot tubs are Jacuzzi's. Here's the bad news, if you think the ice surfacing machine driver's job consists of jumping on that bad-boy and driving it in circles, you're sadly mistaken. While the job may not take any formal education, a good ice resurfacing machine driver has a passion for perfect ice. Not every player wants the same type of ice, either. Just the right temperature, just right speed, and all of the right settings on the machine are required to get that ice in perfect game time shape. Qualifications for these careers: Basic mechanical knowledge, ability to drive in circles, passion for perfect ice. So even if you're days on skates are numbered, there is still a chance that you can find a way to work in the sport that you love and wear the logo of your favorite team. Head to the NHL's career page today and see if there is a hockey job that would fit you. On the ice or off it, you might find the coolest job of your life. Want to see how your resume stacks up? 11 signs youre going to be successful
11 signs you're going to be successful 11 signs you're going to be successful If youâre pursuing your passions, if youâre learning, and if youâre forging solid relationships, youâre probably on track to do great things - even if you arenât extraordinarily famous or wealthy.Below, weâve listed a series of signs - based on research and expert opinion - that youâre doing better at this thing called life than youâd be inclined to believe.Youâre always looking for a better way to do things Are you stuck in the past - or hurtling toward the future? On an episode of Business Insiderâs podcast, â Success! How I Did It,â John Sculley, a former Apple CEO and president of Pepsi, said throughout his career heâs always asked questions like, âWhy is it done this way?â He said success is largely about to the willingness âto solve a problem in a way thatâs never been solved before.â The opposite trait - resistance to change - can stall your career, the same way it stalls big companiesâ progress. Thatâs according to Scott Galloway, a clinical professor of marketing at New York Universityâs Stern School of Business, the founder of the digital intelligence firm L2, and the author of the new book â The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google.â In his book, Galloway writes: âTrying to resist this tide of change will drown you. Successful people in the digital age are those who go to work every day, not dreading the net change, but asking: âWhat if we did it this way?'â You have a vision for the kind of life you want Granted, that vision may evolve over time. But the point is not to take a job exclusively for the short-term benefits - like compensation. As Nathaniel Koloc, former ReWork CEO, told The Harvard Business Review, instead of asking yourself, âWhat job do I want?â you should be asking yourself, âWhat life do I want?â And how does this gig fit into the broader picture? Even if you only have a vision for the year ahead, career coach and former Googler Jenny Blake recommends asking yourself questions like, âWhat does my ideal average day look like?â and âWhat kinds of people do I want to be connected with or meeting?â Youâre using your âsignature strengthsâ Your signature strengths are simply the skills youâre uniquely good at. As Eric Barker, author of â Barking Up the Wrong Tree,â previously told Business Insider, research suggests that âthe more often you use those skills, the more youâre happier, youâre respected, you feel good about your job.â Whatâs more, âif youâre using those skills in your job, youâre going to achieve more.â Youâre open to failure Galloway says the four major tech titans - Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon - are all open to occasional failure, if it means theyâre trying something new. If you want to be successful in your own career, you should be the same way. As Galloway previously told Business Insider, âIf you are not in your own professional life and your professional career kind of wiping out and getting beaned in the face every once in a while, you arenât trying hard enough.â Youâre willing to take calculated risks Youâd be hard pressed to find a successful person who hasnât taken some amount of risk in their career. Take Hearst executive Joanna Coles, for example. As a young newspaper reporter, Coles once burst in on a woman in a bathroom stall in an attempt to land a scoop. Later, she left her job as a foreign correspondent for the Times of London and took a job in magazine journalism - even though she was pregnant and didnât have a visa that would allow her to say in New York. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon and the richest man in the world, has spoken often about how he decides which risks to pursue. In one interview, Bezos explained how he decided to found Amazon: âI knew that when I was 80, I was not going to regret having tried this. I was not going to regret trying to participate in this thing called the Internet that I thought was going to be a really big deal. I knew that if I failed, I wouldnât regret that. âBut I knew the one thing I might regret is not ever having tried. I knew that that would haunt me every day.â Youâre nice to people - even if theyâre not your superiors On another episode of âSuccess! How I Did It,â Coles described the importance of maintaining good relationships with your friends and colleagues. She said: âThe thing that I always try and say to young people starting out is your peer group is really the most important influence on your life because you are going to rise and fall together. And I have always got jobs through the loose ties of friendships and someone knowing someone who might know a job. And, you know, a group of you will start out together, and they sort of pull you with them.â Her number-one life tip? âDonât be an aâ"hole.â You exhibit a âbeginnerâs mindâ Thatâs a concept from Zen Buddhism, and it describes constantly seeing the world anew, as if you didnât know anything about it. Itâs a big advantage in business. The late Steve Jobs was a proponent of the beginnerâs mind. As Jeff Yang wrote in The Wall Street Journal in 2011, Jobs emphasized the need to develop a beginnerâs mind in order to eschew the constraints that cause us to come up with old answers to difficult problems. And Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told The Wall Street Journal: âI kind of try to let go of all the things that have ever happened so far in our industry, which is a lot of stuff, and just go, OK, whatâs going to happen right now?â You make time every day to learn You should be allotting some of your time to reading or research - something that expands your horizons. Beth Comstock, former vice chair of General Electric, recommends devoting 10% of every workday to these activities. In an interview with LinkedIn, Comstock shared some career advice: âThe first thing you have to say to people is: Make room for discovery. If I manage myself, I manage a team, I manage a division, thereâs a certain amount of your budget, your time, your people that need to be focused on whatâs next. âAnd it could be 10% - you know for yourself. I think usually 10% is a pretty good way to think about it. âThink about how you manage your own time. Can I spend 10% of my time a week reading, going to sites like Singularity, TED, talking to people, going to industry events, asking people: What trends are you seeing? What are you nervous about? What are you excited about?â Youâre self-aware According to Tasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist and the author of â Insight,â most people donât know how others really see them. Those who have a more accurate picture of how theyâre coming off tend to be more successful. Eurich recommends finding one or two âloving critics,â or âpeople who will be honest with us while still having our best interests at heart.â Tap them regularly for insight into how you can perform better at work. Executive coach Marshall Goldsmith goes so far as to say that what other people think of you matters even more than how you see yourself. In his book â What Got You Here Wonât Get You There,â Goldsmith writes: âIf we can stop, listen, and think about what others are seeing in us, we have a great opportunity. We can compare the self that we want to be with the self that we are presenting to the rest of the world. We can then begin to make the real changes that are needed to close the gap between our stated values and our actual behavior.â You show gratitude Gratitude can benefit your relationships, your health, and your career. Doug Conant is known for turning around Campbellâs Soup as its CEO. Heâs also known for making gratitude a key leadership strategy: Throughout his career at Campbellâs, he sent more than 30,000 handwritten thank-you notes to staffers and clients. Other famous and successful people have a daily gratitude practice. For example, John Paul DeJoria takes the first five minutes of the day to âbe thankful for life.â Youâre self-compassionate Self-compassion doesnât make you weak or unambitious. Instead, scientists say it can make you more successful. Research on self-compassion suggests that it has three components: engaging in a positive internal dialogue, understanding that everyone makes mistakes, and being aware of your thoughts and feelings without succumbing to them. In â The Happiness Track,â Emma Seppala, science director of Stanfordâs Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. recommends one strategy for practicing self-compassion: Treat yourself as you would treat a colleague or friend who has failed. When one company lets employees pick their own salaries
When one company lets employees pick their own salaries When one company lets employees pick their own salaries Aaron Dignan is the founder of renowned organization design and transformation firm The Ready, and the author of the Next Big Idea Club Spring Finalist, Brave New Work: Are You Ready to Reinvent Your Organization? He recently sat down with Next Big Idea Club Editor Jeremy Price to discuss how to prevent your organization from sabotaging itself, and how to start doing the best work of your life.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This conversation has been edited and condensed. To view the full version, click the video below.Jeremy: You focus on the notion of bureaucracy and how thereâs often far too much of it. You have this astonishing anecdote about how bureaucracy can almost looks like sabotage.Aaron: Yeah, a [government document] written during World War II was declassified a few years back, and it had to do with how to sabotage a company. It says things like, âHold confe rences when thereâs more important work to be done,â and âTalk at great length, using personal anecdotes,â and âHave three people approve everything when one person would do.âMost of us who are in companies that are bigger than 500 people are like, âYep, Iâve seen that, and that, and that.âWhat was obviously sabotage a lifetime ago is now indistinguishable from work.Policies, agreements, rule of law- these are all good things, but bureaucracy has metastasized into something far more pernicious and pervasive. Thereâs red tape wrapped around every handle, and I think people are sensing that.Jeremy: Absolutely. Iâve been in so many meetings, especially on advisory boards in college, when we were just spinning our wheels, with people talking and talking but not doing anything of consequence. So I love how your book points out that we have more meetings than we really need. In fact, you actually recommend trying a period of two weeks where there are no meetings at al l. Tell me more about that.Aaron: Meetings are the microcosm of the organization. Whatever happens in meetings- wasted time, lack of alignment, lack of candor- is probably happening across the whole organization. We like to think about meetings as a starting place for building new habits and new mindsets. Teams often have so many meetings, and meetings to prepare for meetings, because itâs all part of the theater of, âLet me present perfect work, and get the approvals, and the feedback, and the gold stars.âItâs just internal theater, instead of customer-focused work.So one way to deal with that vast amount of meetings is just to stop having them. Because changing and tweaking each one in concert with everyoneâs participation is a massive undertaking. But just agreeing, âFor the next two or three weeks, weâre not going to have any recurring meetingsâ- thatâs actually a really simple thing to execute. Itâs hard to agree to, but itâs easy to execute. Then you get to find out what you miss. The reality is, I bet youâll miss a little bit, but not a lot. Once you figure out what you do miss, you can then design much more deliberate, structured, team-owned meetings in order to get right at that stuff.Jeremy: I love that. If youâre looking to make a positive change in your organization, the impulse is often to say, âOkay, what new thing can we do? What new policy can we enact?â But in your book, you mention that a great place to start is actually to say, âOkay, what can we take away?âIn this case, itâs the constant stream of meetings. So when organizations start with that mentality of, âOkay, what can we do less of?â, is there anything else that people cut back on with positive results?Aaron: Removing constraint is a great way of seeing whatâs really going on, and seeing what emerges. Rather than saying, âOh man, the travel policy isnât working for us. What should we replace it with?â, the answer might be, âWhat if we didn ât have a travel policy for a little while?âMaybe something bad would happen, but itâs far more likely that the world would stay almost exactly the way it is. So then itâs just one thing we donât have to write down, or deal with, or comply with.If youâre gardening, you feed the things that you want to see happening, and you starve the things you donât. You weed the things you donât want, and you give extra water and fertilizer to the things you do want. You notice what happens when you interact with it, right? Tuning an organization is [similar]- itâs the work of trying things, whether that be adding or removing, feeding or starving, and then noticing what happens next.Youâre not going to fix it- youâre in a relationship with it. Youâre just managing it.Jeremy: I feel like Morning Star is an organization that is effectively putting these policies into practice. Can you take me through exactly what theyâre doing?Aaron: Morning Star is an interesting one- they âre the worldâs largest tomato processor, and while tomato processing may not be the most glamorous thing in the world, they take a very human-centered approach to the work. They have a self-organizing environment where people have a lot of autonomy, and thereâs a lot of transparency and trust.Team members write their own job descriptions and set their own salaries using an advice process that allows their colleagues to provide feedback on what theyâre doing. But ultimately, [each employee] has the final say to work on the things they want to work on, and make what they want to make. And it works really well- the company has been remarkably profitable, in some cases ten times more profitable than their competitors.Profit is one measure of success, but what I care about is [whether or not] people love to work there, and if they feel connected to their community, and if they feel like theyâre doing something meaningful. That stuff matters. And you see at places like Patagonia t hat when people feel connected to the purpose of their work, the results tend to follow.Jeremy: For sure. I still just canât believe that theyâre setting their own salaries and writing their own job titles. Thereâs an incredible amount of trust that you need to place in your employees if youâre setting up those policies. You write that the way we organize our companies is a reflection of our assumptions about human nature. What are the underlying assumptions about human nature that are currently out there in the workplace? And what are the beliefs about human nature that you are trying to encourage?Aaron: So back in the â60s, Douglas McGregor was looking at attitudes about work, workers, trust, and autonomy, and he had this idea of Theory X and Theory Y. Theory X was this idea that people were basically untrustworthy and lazy and uncreative, and needed to be told what to do with carrots and sticks. And then Theory Y was the idea that no, people are creative under the right c onditions, and they want to learn, self-actualize, and take responsibility.McGregorâs thesis was that Theory X people actually donât exist, that weâre all Theory Y by nature- but because we believe there are Theory X people, we build these elaborate cages for people. And then, because weâre chameleons, we start to show up that way. When he would ask people, âAre you Theory X or Theory Y?â, everybody would say that theyâre Theory Y. You might say, âWell, what about the people who work at your grocery store, or your gas station?Theyâve got to be Theory X.â But we canât all be Theory Y, except everyone else is Theory X, right?Look at Samâs Club versus Costco- itâs the exact same business, in the exact same industry, but one treats its workers differently. It pays them differently, and trusts them differently. And you see the result in the experience of walking in the store; you see the result in the PL; you see the result in what feels like the caliber of talent .And some people would argue, âWell, one of them is getting better people.â But whenever we start talking about âbetter peopleâ or âthe top talent,â I get suspicious. Because itâs like, âWell, are they really getting the good people? Or is it just that the environment is making people achieve more, making them realize what theyâre capable of, and helping them show up differently?âJeremy: Right. Weâve been talking about bureaucracy, and how some organizations stifle human creativity and human flourishing, and it all makes me think of this story by Franz Kafka called The Trial. Itâs about a man who wakes up one morning, and thereâs a couple of men in his house. They say, âHey, youâre under arrest,â and heâs like, âFor what?â They wonât tell him, but they say, âYou need to show up at court on this particular day, at this particular time, and get things sorted out.â So he does, but even then, the judge wonât tell him what he did wrong. So he j ust bounces around to all these different lawyers and judges and members of the local judiciary, but he can never figure out what the heck is going on- heâs lost in this maze of bureaucracy. So Iâm wondering, when it comes to the ideas in your book, do those apply to the government and our legal system, or is it really just for businesses?Aaron: Itâs funny you bring that story up, because it was actually in the first draft of the book. What Iâm writing about has to do with how human beings come together to solve problems and create new things, so it isnât only for for-profit organizations.Weâre talking about the way we work together, so I think government is squarely in that space. And in many ways, government is one of the places where bureaucracy and dysfunctional teaming is more pronounced right now.Weâre seeing massive polarization, immobilization, and inability to get anything done. The legislators of our generation have created far fewer laws, changes, and programs than their predecessors, and itâs all because weâre stuck. And itâs not that the core tenets of democracy are wrong- itâs just that the way we design these systems matters, and little changes affect things in massive ways. If you suddenly decide that corporations are people, thatâs one small choice that plays out over many decades. There are some cases globally, and even domestically, of smaller municipalities starting to govern differently using ideas of consent, rather than voting or consensus or autocracy. And I think thatâs encouraging, but I think we have a long way to go.Jeremy: You also mention in the book that Google gave its employees more time to work freely on independent projects, and the results spoke for themselves- they ended up with products like Gmail and Google Maps. Could you tell us about what happened there?Aaron: Yeah, Google let its employees spend 20% of their time [working on personal projects of their choosing]. Interestingly, some other cases we look at in the book take an even more radical stance:âWhy 20% time? Why not 40, 60, 100% time? Why not just let people that we trust decide what to work on?âIf we put a bunch of people together and give them a shared purpose, or they choose a shared purpose, can they just coordinate and figure out how to get that work done? And what happens if they donât?I think that one of the misunderstandings about self-management and self-organizing systems is the idea that if thereâs going to be a failure, then by definition, that approach is wrong. So letâs say we forget to clean the toilet for two weeks- thatâs actually where learning and mastery happens.Anybody who has ever raised a child will tell you that you canât prevent them from ever skinning their knee, or they will never learn how to run- they wonât be able to do anything on their own. They become completely codependent and messed up as adults. You have to give them enough leash to make mistakes and to learn. You donâ t let them do anything catastrophic- thereâs no jumping off buildings. But thereâs a lot of jumping off the couch. So with these systems- like 20% time or 100% time- even if theyâre likely to create a problem down the road, thatâs not necessarily a bug. Thatâs a feature. When nobody cleaned the toilet for two weeks, the feature is that now we all have to sit in a room and be like, âHow are we going to get this done?âAnd then we decide: Maybe itâs a rotation, or an election, or a tour of duty. Or maybe weâre going to hire an outside firm that weâll pay to clean the toilet. If they have enough autonomy, transparency, and purpose, people will solve these problems- they just might need to fail a little bit along the way. And thatâs okay.Jeremy: That speaks to this whole concept of anti-fragility, in which systems actually get stronger following mistakes and slip-ups.Aaron: Right- your job as a leader is not to ensure perfect execution. Your job is to ensure continua lly expanding capability, and that means you have a totally different playbook.Youâre not in the business of preventing errors- youâre in the business of making sure we learn from errors.Jeremy: That approach also brings human dignity back into the equation. Youâre not saying, âHey, I expect you to be this robot that gets it right every time.â Instead, youâre recognizing and accepting workers as imperfect human beings.Lastly, what is one piece of advice you would give to anyone who wants to change their organization in a humane and productive way?Aaron: It actually starts with the question thatâs on the inside flap of the book: âWhat is stopping you from doing the best work of your life?âWhether youâre the leader of your team or not, go back to your team and ask, âCan we spend ten minutes talking about whatâs stopping us from doing the best work of our lives? Then can we look at the list, and pick one thing that weâre willing to try in the next week that mig ht move us forward?âItâs as simple as that. And if you do that once or twice, you see that itâs not something that you have to spend the entire weekend on- itâs something you can take small and immediate steps toward. And I think that starts to unlock bigger questions, making us more comfortable with the principles that actually serve us, like autonomy, transparency, consent, decentralization, and trust. If you want to change your organization, change it by changing it. Itâs not going to happen in a PowerPoint org chart- itâs going to happen in a conversation. So go into that conversation with just that one question in mind. See what happens, then rinse and repeat. This article first appeared on Heleo.

Weird Interview Questions Companies Ask, and How to Respond
Weird Interview Questions Companies Ask, and How to Respond Weird Interview Questions Companies Ask, and How to Respond 4What is your favorite pump up song, and why?â Before demanding to know what the heck these weird interview questions have to do with anything, take a breath. âMany times, the interviewer is trying to assess the way a candidate handles pressure,â says Vicky Oliver, author of 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions. âUnfortunately, due to the ancient part of our brains that reacts to stress, we have a fight or flight reaction.â Weird interview questions serve other purposes too. Someone asking, âHow many roses do you think were bought in the United States on Valentineâs Day last year?â likely has an interest in seeing you reason logically when presented with a challenge. Likewise, an interviewer who 10 minutes in asks you to close your eyes and describe everything in the room as specifically as possible may be trying to assess your attention to detail. Weird Interview Questions Companies Ask While you canât prepare for every curveball that might be thrown, you can practice thinking on your feet and remaining calm. Conduct some mock interviews in which a friend includes a few out-of-the-ordinary questions, such as: If you could be any type of animal, which would it be and why? (The interviewer is trying to gauge creativity and personality.) How would you go about teaching your grandmother to use Facebook? (Are you patient and capable of breaking down information in ways your audience can understand?) Who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Batman? (The person isnât interested in which hero you prefer; he wants to see if youâll push for information such as where the battle is taking place.) How would you design a spice rack for someone who is blind? (Can you spot the challenges in a situation and come up with ideas on how to overcome them?) Stumped on a Question? The first thing to do is to think about what the employer is trying to get at. Is the question asking you to think critically, or come up with a reasoned response to something? Is it trying to gauge your personality, or test your skills or personal attributes? Try to figure out what the employer wants to know. In this article, youll find detailed ways to answer odd interview questions with thoughtful answers based on what you think the employer is trying to find out. Oliver notes that its okay to occasionally say, I am not sure how to answer that. I would love to think on it and circle back to you on it. If you still dont know the answer by the end of the interview, give it 24 hours and then write to your interviewer with the answer. (A well-crafted follow-up letter is mandatory anyway.) âThe main thing you can never do in a job interview (if you want to be offered the position) is lose your cool,â Oliver says. âAs long as you dont do that, you are still in the game.â Looking for more advice on interviews?
